Are carbs really bad for you?

The answer is NO! Despite all the negative wrap carbohydrates get, they play an essential role in our diets. There are two basic categories of carbs: simple carbs and complex carbs. What are the differences?

SIMPLE CARBOHYDRATES:

Simple carbs are described as “bad carbs”. Examples are: white bread, biscuits, cakes, soft drinks, doughnuts, pasta, candy and the list goes on! They are those in their simplest form, either single glucose molecules or very short chains of glucose. What happens is, the enzymes in your body break them down VERY quickly into glucose. Which leads to a quick rise in blood sugar (which is something you want to avoid) and then the glucose converts into a fat storage.

COMPLEX CARBOHYDRATES:

Complex carbs are found in nutritious foods such as whole grains and vegetables, making them the “good carbs”. Examples are sweet potato, potato, turnips, cauliflower, broccoli and carrots. Complex carbs contain branched chains of glucose, making them more resilient to breaking down, and releasing sugars at a slower rate. Having these in your diet means you may reduce your likelihood of getting diabetes and support your weight management.
